Damn if you do, Damn if you don't...

Often at times a young woman finds herself in a damn if you or damn if you don’t situation. No matter how hard a woman works to earn her own money and build her credibility in terms of work, there will always men who will assume that just because a young woman is “ambitious” and “profit oriented “she will easily give up her values for material comfort, grab every work opportunity, even in the process of selling herself like a piece of meat.

But of course in reality, women are motivated by various reasons. “Ambition” and “profit-orientation” can be just an off shoot of a young woman’s deep seated aspirations to being in control of her own life, to strive to be financially independent, and gain respect even if it meant working in jobs that do not glorify good looks and comfort. Others are for protecting one’s “dignity” and “chastity” and values brought by religion. Regardless of reason, money and material comfort are not the only reason why women work hard.

Whatever the reasons, more often these women who stand up for something besides just making ends meet are never glorified in popular media. Often the role models young women are given are women who will do anything for money even if it meant being treated like a pound of bargained meat, or repressing one’s faculty of intelligence. Poverty is often stated as a reason for such behavior, but how can this explain the numerous poor women who chose to work as housemaids, factory workers, security guards and sales ladies?
